Taking care of someone with disability can be a challenging experience; but nevertheless, the task is not without its own rewards. NDIS stands as a hub of proof that the entire country continues to ensure everyone gets an opportunity and the right support to the lead a dignified life.

National Disability Insurance Scheme covers a wide range of funded services which are provided to meet different needs of a person with disability and their carer to improve the quality of life. As a registered NDIS provider in Australia, ZedCare Ability Services also aims to enlighten the community with different types of respite care and accommodation so that families and carers will make the right decisions.

Who Are Eligible For the NDIS Accommodation Services?

NDIS accommodation services are for persons with a disability who find their own accommodation substandard because of their disability that is hindering their regular activities or preventing access to be a part of the residence. Other participants who need complex behaviour support, or those whose quality of life has been significantly diminished by their disability, can also be considered for NDIS accommodation services. The prime aim of these accommodation is to increase the available support and help the participant reach their individual goals.

Moreover, those persons who are going through a transitional phase after significant injury or those who have temporary or unsuitable accommodation unmatching with their disability needs are also eligible. It is all about providing the opportunity to have safe, suitable and dignified living solutions that meet the need and vision of the people.

NDIS Accommodation Options

Offered in the form of self-managed, or agency managed accommodation, the NDIS has access to a framework that allows for custom-built individual homes as well as rental home-sharing that will allow the participants to live with other people. It is not a just about accommodating the people with disability but ‘improving’ their lives and allowing them to live as much as a full and productive with the care they need.

  • Supported Independent Living

When delivering the NDIS, Supported Independent Living (SIL) is the kind of support provided to the participants, so that they can live in different premises, independently or in shared manner. SIL can be best defined in terms of the help and support, as well as, the services offered to the participants so that they can accomplish their daily routine activities. This could include help in preparing meals, doing the laundry works, cleaning rooms, taking care of personal hygiene or even the activities that promote social interaction and participation within community.

Another advantage of SIL is its adaptability.  It is designed to provide care and support according to the need of each participant which may include the necessary tools and assistance to live a meaningful life on one’s own terms.

  • Short Term Accommodation or Respite Care

Sometimes, participants or their primary caregivers may require a brief change or even a respite. This is where Short-Term Accommodation (STA) or Respite care services can become vital. The NDIS provides for Short Term Accommodation or Respite care to cater for such circumstances. This service pays for the cost of care when the participant is taken to another facility for up to 14 days giving the primary carer a much-needed break without the participant’s care being paused.

  • Medium-term accommodation

The NDIS acknowledges the different needs of participants when it comes to accommodation, one of the which is the provision for medium term accommodation. This accommodation is normally for a period not exceeding 3 months or 90 days. This provision provides that persons with disabilities a housing option that is both safe and suitable when they are in transitional phase, need temporary environment change or waiting for the modifications of their own home.

This 90-day period provides stability and security, allowing participants the comfort and peace of mind to focus on other essential aspects of their lives – whether for healthcare, employment, or familial obligations.

  • Specialist Disability Accommodation

The Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is where the support is available specifically for people with severe functional disabilities and those who need high-level care. As for SDA funded by the NDIS, it offers potential solution for the person with disability. The accommodation can be termed as ‘apartments’ as well as ‘shared homes’ within the community.

The aim is to create a suitable and individually supported living environment which will improve the participant’s lifestyle and encourage the higher level of the independence. It’s worth noting that not all participants will be eligible for SDA. However, those who do, will have a liveable homelike environment regardless of the level of care they need to achieve their goals.

  • Individualised Living Options

The emphasis of NDIS on Individualised Living Options (ILO) explores the importance of choice and autonomy for participants. With ILO, participants are empowered to explore diverse living alternatives, whether with a considerate host or a compatible housemate, moulding their environment to fit their unique needs and preferences.

ILO is a basic component of making an appropriate environment for the person to live in but it is embedded ILO is to complement other funded applications that NDIS offers. This synergy makes certain that a client receives an all-round care that covers all aspects that he/she needs in order to live a normal life.

It is important to acknowledge that the NDIS acknowledges informal care giving arrangements as invaluable. Family support with love, care, and constructive help, as well as support from friends and people in the community, are also important for participants. Therefore, ILO works with these informal support structures and adds on to them so that each and every participant feels welcome, accepted and socially included.
