Once you have received your national disability Insurance scheme plan, you will have to decide which NDIS service provider you want to deliver your support. When choosing who will provide your funded supports, you have the option of choosing between registered service providers with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIS) and unregistered provider.

A provider has to go through a lengthy and costly process to be registered with NDIS. This becomes a hurdle for small businesses sometimes, so they choose to stay unregistered even though they have all the skills and high-quality service.

Although no matter how skilled you are, if you are registered with NDIS, it’s like a cherry on the cake. Registering with the NDIS will help you grow your user base. Service providers can apply to be registered by the National Disability Insurance Agency. However, it is not mandatory to do so to offer support under NDIS.

What’s The Difference Between Unregistered And Registered Providers?

For NDIS participants, the main difference is that you can access unregistered providers only when you have a plan-managed or self-managed NDIS plan. On the other hand, if you are NDIS managed, you only have access to registered NDIS providers.

If you self-manage your NDIS plan, unregistered NDIS service providers will send their invoices to you, and you will manually have to claim the funds back from NDIS using the NDIS portal, but if you are plan-managed, your plan manager will request the funds for you from NDIS.

Why Should I Choose A Registered Disability Service Provider?

Although registering with NDIA is not mandatory, but if they are registered, they sure will have their perks. Service providers who are registered with NDIA have all the required qualifications, approvals, experience, and access to supports. A registered disability services provider has to comply with specific laws, guidelines, policies which non-registered providers don’t have to follow. While choosing registered support providers, NDIS participants have choice and control while ensuring high-quality NDIS support.

Can I Hire A Non-Registered Service Providers?

You can choose service providers who are not registered NDIS providers when you are self-managing your plan.

If you are managing your plan with the help of an NDIS support coordination provider, the service provider has to be registered with NDIS.

When it comes to unregistered NDIS support coordinator, they are not obliged to follow the quality and safeguards requirements of the NDIS Commission. So, it is up to you to determine the quality and safety of your NDIS support plan.
